FORWARD FROM A FRIEND

FORWARD FROM A FRIEND

 From Jared Polis:
Sometimes the shortest distance between two points isn't a straight line.
We have an opportunity to make the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA) the law of the land, but not by passing it as a standalone bill. Instead, we'll make it a part of the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which President Obama has listed as one of his top priorities for the 112th Congress.
In order for that to happen, though, SNDA needs Republican support in the Senate. We currently have two Republican co-sponsors in the House.
If you have friends or family in red states, please email them now and ask them to contact their senators.
This may seem like a strange way to get SNDA passed, but this is how things work in Congress -- a bill that can't pass on its own can sometimes pass if it's attached to another bill.
I wish we didn't have to do it this way. I wish that all of our country's leaders cared enough about LGBT youth to support SNDA without question or hesitation.
Sadly that isn't the case -- but if we can get just a few Republican senators to co-sponsor the bill, we can still make a big difference in the lives of LGBT students.
You can make that difference. Ask any friends or family in red states to contact their senators now:
Thanks,
Jared
